저는 에스모드 베를린 2학년 때인 2011년 봄, 한 달 동안 에스모드 서울로 교환학생을 왔다가 깊은 인상을 받고, 2012년 에스모드 서울 3학년으로 편입하였습니다. 

저는 세 가지 이유에서 에스모드 서울 편입을 결정했습니다. 첫째, 에스모드 서울 교수님들은 일에 대해 열정적이실 뿐만 아니라 실력이 정말 좋으십니다. 또한, 에스모드 서울은 학습 분위기도 매우 좋습니다. 모든 면에 있어서 많은 노력과 열정을 기울이는 에스모드 서울의 모든 과정에 매우 깊은 인상을 받았습니다. 1학년 미니데필레에서 3학년 졸업작품 심사에 이르기까지 모든 과정은 매우 전문적이고 조직적으로 진행됩니다.

두 번째, 에스모드 서울은 창의적이고 영감을 주는 사람들과 패션 매장이 가득한  패션의 중심지에 위치하고 있다는 점입니다. 바로 옆에서, 세계적인 패션 브랜드와 한국의 젊은 디자이너들로부터 영감을 받을 수 있었습니다.

마지막은 동대문 시장입니다. 베를린에는 동대문 원단시장 같은 곳이 없고 매장 몇 개가 도시에 드문드문 있을 뿐입니다. 동대문 원단시장 덕분에 저는 완전히 색다른 접근방식으로 졸업작품 컬렉션을 진행할 수 있었습니다. 레이저 컷, 패브릭 프린트, 가죽 소재 개발 등 다양한 컬러와  소재를 사용할 수 있었습니다. 독일에서는 소재도 다양하지 않고 그나마도 매우 비싸서 불가능한 작업이 한국에서는 가능했습니다. 독일에서는 원단 샘플도 돈을 주고 사야 합니다.

에스모드 베를린과 서울의 차이점을 한가지 더 말씀 드리자면, 베를린에서는 서스테이너빌러티, 즉 지속가능성에 중점을 둔 컨셉을 매우 중요시하는 반면, 서울에서는 완성된 작품의 질을 더 중요하게 생각한다는 점입니다. 이 모든 걸 종합해서, 저는 에스모드 서울에서 마지막 학년인 3학년을 보내기로 한 결정을 후회하지 않습니다. 에스모드 서울에서 저는 컬러 컨셉 개발, 무드보드, 패션 일러스트레이션, 도식화, 패턴제작 특히 봉제와 마감기술 등 제 실력을 향상시킬 수 있었습니다. 칼 이석태 디자인실에서의 기업연수를 통해, 한국 패션브랜드의 구조와 과정에 대해 배울 수 있는 기회도 가졌습니다.

에스모드의 수업 과정은 매우 힘들어서 때로는 포기하고 싶을 때도 있을 것입니다. 하지만 계속 정진하시라고 말씀 드리고 싶습니다. 저는 힘들 때마다 스스로에게 '내가 제일 좋아하는 일을 지금 하고 있는데, 불행해할 이유가 뭐지?' 라고 되뇌었습니다. 저는 에스모드 서울에서 패션디자인을 공부할 수 있었던 것에 대해, 그리고 제 결정을 지지해 주신 부모님께 깊이 감사 드립니다.

마지막으로 여러분이 열심히 노력하신다면 그에 대한 대가가 반드시 있을 것이라고 말씀 드리고 싶습니다. 저는 기업연수를 하면서, 다른 학교에 비해 에스모드 서울의 수업환경이 얼마나 훌륭한지를 알 수 있었습니다. 에스모드 서울은 여러분들에게 필요한 모든 것을 가능한 한 많이 배울 수  있도록 기회를 제공합니다. 그 기회를 잡으시기 바랍니다.

My name is Sarah Kim.  I am 24 years old.  In spring 2011 I did an one month exchange to Esmod Seoul, which had a huge impression on me and  led to my decision to transfer from ESMOD Berlin to ESMOD Seoul for my final year.

There are 3  main reasons for my decision to enroll here:

First of all, the teachers at Esmod Seoul are not only passionate about their job, but also are really competent! The  whole studying  atmosphere  at Esmod Seoul is really great . I was impressed how much effort  and ambition is put in everything: Be it a mini-fashion show for the first year or the jury presentation of the third year- everything is very professional and well organized!

Secondly, the area the school is located in is full of creative and inspiring people and stores. Right next door you can get inspired by young korean designers, next to all the international fashion brands.

And finally there is Dongdaemun!  In  Berlin there is nothing comparable to Dongdaemun, only a few stores scattered through the city. Due to this there is a totally different approach , when making a collection. Here in Seoul every material, in every color is available! On top of that you have access to lasercut, fabric printing,  leather treatment, etc. Here I had Opportunities, which are not possible in Germany due to lack of material and choice or the enormous higher price- you even have to pay for fabric swatches.

Another major difference between Berlin and Seoul is the main focus. In Berlin, where sustainability plays an important role the concept , rather than the quality of the finished product is  the most important thing.

All in all, I don't regret to chose Esmod Seoul for my final year. During my time at Esmod Seoul, I deepen my knowledge in creating color concepts, moodboarding, fashion illustration, technical drawing, pattern making and especially my sewing skills and finishing techniques . Furthermore I had the possibility to absolve an internship at Kaal E Suktae  to gain insight into the structures and processes of  a Korean fashion brand. Studying at ESMOD is really hard and there are some times, when you want to give up. I want to tell you to keep on fighting! In hard times I tell myself, that right now I am doing the thing I love the most, so why be unhappy about it? Moreover, I'm grateful that I am able to be here and study fashion design and that my parents support me in my decision.

All in all, In the end, all your  hard work will pay off. During all my internships I noticed, how good Esmod prepared me for the working environment. Esmod offers you the opportunity to learn so much and I advice you take in as much as possible.
