어려운 아이들 돕는 디자이너 되고 싶어요
Dreaming of being a designer helping disadvantaged children
말레이시아에서 온 미셸창 이라고 합니다. 현재 에스모드 서울 3학년에서 아동복을 전공하고 있어요.
고등학교 졸업 후 건축학을 공부할까 했지만, 소셜미디어의 패션관련 게시물을 찾아보거나 쇼핑할 때 옷감에 관심을 보이는 제 자신을 발견하고 패션으로 진로를 정하게 되었습니다.
에스모드 서울과 도쿄를 고민하다가 한국어와 한국의 문화예술에 더 관심이 가서 서울로 결정을 했어요. 언어장벽과 문화의 차이 때문에 이 곳에서의 삶이 힘들 때도 있었지만, 마음이 맞는 친구들을 만날 수 있었고 지금은 친구들, 교수님들과 한국어로 의사소통을 하는 수준이 되었습니다.
아동복을 전공으로 선택한 이유는 훗날 제 아이를 아주 멋지게 꾸며주는 엄마가 되고 싶어서 였어요. 요즘은 70년대 디스코&롤러스케이트 테마로, 딸과 엄마가 함께 금요일 밤 댄스파티를 즐기는 컨셉의 졸업작품 컬렉션을 준비하고 있습니다.
이번 학기에는 장학금을 받아서 더욱 행복했습니다. 외국인으로 한국에서 홀로 살아가는데 여러모로 큰 힘이 되었어요. 다시 한번 장학금을 제공해주신 동동장학재단에 감사 드립니다.
저는 디자이너 빅토리아 베컴(Victoria Beckham)을 존경하고 그녀에게서 영감을 받는데요, 그녀의 컬렉션에서 힘과 자신감을 느끼곤 합니다. 그녀처럼 훗날 저만의 브랜드를 갖고 싶고, 특히 어려운 아이들을 도와줄 수 있는 디자이너가 되고 싶어요.
에스모드 서울 입학을 희망하는 외국인 학생들이 있다면 꼭 해주고 싶은 말이 있어요. 절대 포기하지 말라고요. 매일 더 나은 사람이 되도록 열심히 노력해야 한다는 걸 기억하면 좋겠습니다.
에스모드 서울의 30주년이라는 역사의 순간에 함께할 수 있어 매우 기쁘고, 미래에도 지금처럼 패션디자이너의 꿈을 키우는 학생들의 원동력이 되어줄 것을 소망합니다.

I’m Michelle Chang, I came from malaysia and I was planning to study architecture after high school but was more interested in fashion.
2. 2 years ago, why KOREA? Why ESMOD SEOUL?
While searching for a fashion school. I wanted to be in around Asia. Something different from what we see in European’s fashion. 3 years ago, I was contemplating between Tokyo and Seoul. I decided to enroll at Esmod Seoul because I was more interested in korean language, arts and culture.
3. The reason that you're studying FASHION? and Why KIDS FASHION for major?
I found myself looking through fashion pages on social media and was interested in textile while I was shopping. That’s how I got into fashion. I chose kidswear it’s because I’ve always wanted to be a mother and I know I would be a mother who dressed up my kids super cool and awesome!! And I think kids fashion needs more varieties styles in the industry.
4. How was your life at ESMOD SEOUL for 3 years and the best thing of ESMOD SEOUL?
Although life in Esmod Seoul is stressful and tiring. Sometimes there’s language barrier or culture differences but for me the best memories I had it’s meeting new friends and ( even now ) I’m still surprised that I can communicate in korean with my friends and teachers.
5. You got scholarship this semester! How's feeling?
I was able to receive scholarships this year and I couldn’t be happier and thankful enough to our sponsor and teachers. It helped me a lot in terms of financial especially as a foreigner living alone in Korea.
6. Your Favorite designer? Why?
I have many favourite designer But someone who I admired and inspired to be is Victoria Beckham. She’s a working mother and has a beautiful family. Her collections are very woman empowering and gives confidence to women who wears her clothes.
7. What's your goal (dream? / wanna-being? / plan?)
Other than wanting to have my own fashion brand. I want to be someone who can make a change in something relating to fashion. Especially helping children who are in need and tackling fashion issues that is happening now.
8. A message for foreign students who wants studying at ESMOD SEOUL
Although there are times that will be difficult because of language barrier or differences in culture. It’s very important to know your own value and always remember to work hard and never give up. Always strive to become a better-self each day.
9. A message for ESMOD SEOUL's 30 anniversary
Happy 30th anniversary!!! I’m so glad to be part of this history. And I wish you all the best for the future and continue to inspire students to be a designer that they always dream to be.
